Force Multiplier

Technology’s Role in Community Safety and Privacy Trade-Offs

Episode Summary

The second episode of Force Multiplier features guest Pierre Racz, CEO of Genetec, a private family-owned company that develops networked physical security, data analytics, and operational efficiency solutions. The conversation is focused on technology’s role in the trade-off between public safety and privacy, and how the Overton Window (or window of discourse) – which refers to those policies that the public, and therefore policymakers, will support at any given time – has blown wide open on a number of fronts (most recently the COVID-19 pandemic) in the tech industry. As the novel coronavirus continues to sweep the planet, many are looking to tech to provide community safety measures (e.g., contact tracing, outbreak monitoring and virtual doctor’s visits), while the line between surveillance and privacy remains hotly contested.
